Christmas in Brixham
Since 2009 Brixham Town Council has proudly funded the Christmas lights supported by the generosity of local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce.
This year the seasonal display budget has been reduced by £5,000 and support from local businesses is more important than ever if we are to continue with lights making our town look more attractive. We are grateful to Brixham Chamber of Commerce who has committed £1,000 to support the lights in 2016, but we need more to proceed.
Despite working with a reduced budget and increased costs we hope to achieve a bigger event that will be marketed as a weekend attraction by working with local groups such as Chamber of Commerce and Brixham Arts and Theatre Company (BATS).
Jacqui Shaw, Chairperson of Brixham Chamber of Commerce said “We need to pull together as a business community by putting our hands in our pockets and donating, to ensure that we retain our lights for Christmas and that Brixham shines brightly in the festive calendar”.
Each year the Town Council writes to all local traders and asks for a contribution towards the Christmas lights and switch on event. Members of the Community Services Committee (responsible for the seasonal display budget) agreed that local businesses should be contacted earlier this year to ensure we had enough contributions to proceed and therefore to appeal to you, the business community, for contributions which ultimately make the Brixham shopping and hospitality environment more vibrant.
We as a council have been instrumental in improving the lighting - in 2014/15 new LED lighting around the harbour area was purchased which included illuminating the historic fish quay, 2015 also saw the installation of eight 3D LED Cross street lights in Fore Street and the entrance to Bolton Street. Middle Street and the Town Hall were also lit up with new LED lighting.
The Christmas lights are subjected to extreme conditions and vital infrastructure repairs are scheduled for 2016 to ensure that the lights are working consistently. We cannot any longer support this without Brixham business community support.
Please make a donation that will help to keep Brixham’s festive season shining brightly. A suggested minimum donation of at least £35.00 from every business in Brixham would make a substantial contribution towards the overall costs.
All businesses that donate will be mentioned in the January edition of the Brixham Signal. Brixham Town Council thanks you in advance for your generous contribution.
