Extended Services

Our Vision:

Torbay’s vision for the development of Extended Services describes how all stakeholders should work together, to secure and promote the active participation of children and young people enabling them to shape and influence the services that are developed. This is:

  • Working collaboratively to develop inclusive and excellent high quality extended services in and around schools.
  • Involving, valuing and empowering children and young people to promote high self esteem, to fulfil their potential and to enable successful learning).

It is our aspiration that by September 2010 every school will be an access point to a minimum ‘core offer’ of services within the locality. The realisation of this vision will transform the life chances of children and young people and impact positively on communities across Torbay. Our vision promotes learning as the route to success and advances a preventative strategy that removes social and emotional barriers to learning. Torbay’s communities of the future will be places of opportunity and expectation.

The development of extended services in and around schools is a fundamental component of Torbay’s preventative strategy to improve the provision of early intervention and support for children and young people at times of need.

Strategic Objectives - Delivery of the Core Offer (CO)

The strategic aim of the Extended Services strategy is underpinned by specific objectives to ensure delivery of the ‘core offer’. These objectives are prioritised to maximise impact and achieve a trajectory that will enable all schools to provide access to the ‘core offer’ by 2010.

  • Swift and Easy Referral: To provide assistance to children, young people and families at times of need, through early identification and appropriate intervention; and improved access to targeted and specialist services when required.
  • Childcare / Activities: To provide play, care and learning services for all children 0-14 (16 SEN) through access to high quality and affordable local childcare in and around schools and children’s centres.
  • Study Support: To provide children and young people with access to a variety of activities, experiences and learning opportunities in a range of environments, to secure increased levels of engagement, motivation and achievement.
  • Parenting Support: To increase parental interest and involvement in learning, through the development of targeted parenting programmes and family learning opportunities. Provide information on the availability of local and national services.
  • Community Access: To promote community engagement in lifelong learning and enrichment opportunities by improving access to local facilities.  To impact positively on children and young people by raising aspirations and the determination to progress from school to further education, training or employment.
