Pregnancy
I think I might be pregnant
If you have had unprotected sex without a condom or any other form of contraception such as the Pill or Implant there’s a chance you could be pregnant.
You can get free emergency after sex contraception within 72 hours (3 days) to avoid pregnancy, if it’s later than 3 days you can have an IUD fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex to avoid pregnancy.
Otherwise you should wait until you miss your next period to have a pregnancy test.
It’s also important to get tested for STI’s, particularly Chlamydia, if you’re 16- 24yrs. You can drop-in to your local sexual health clinic for free and confidential advice if you think you maybe pregnant, even if you are under 16.
Many unplanned pregnancies occur because some young people are too afraid or embarrassed to talk about condoms and contraception. You can visit your local clinic to talk about which contraception is right for you and your partner.
Contraception is free including emergency contraception - see the
Contraception Choices page for more information.
Help! I’m pregnant
If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant or your partners pregnant, this can be a very confusing time. You might feel differently about it than your partner, but don’t despair you have options available to you and people you can talk to. At this stage it’s a good idea to tell someone you trust who can help you talk it over.
Your choices
- Continue with the pregnancy
- Continue with the pregnancy and put the baby up for fostering or adoption
- End the pregnancy by abortion
If you are thinking about having an abortion it’s important to act quickly as waiting could reduce your options for abortion. For more information on your options visit
BPAS
or if you would like to talk about your options you can visit your local clinic for support.
Finding support for you that is not biased is important. It can be confusing or difficult but tell someone sooner rather than later.
