Sport can have a very powerful and positive influence on people, but in particular young people. Not only can it provide opportunities for enjoyment and achievement but it can also develop valuable qualities such as self-esteem, leadership and teamwork.
These positive effects, however, can only take place if sport is in the right hands, namely in the hands of those who place the welfare of all young people first and adopt practices that support, protect and empower them.
It is important to remember that, as an organisation with responsibility for children, Torbay Council has both moral and legal obligations towards the protection of children (persons under the age of 18).
Torbay Council is committed to providing a safe sporting environment for all children who use council-owned facilities or participate in council organised activities. As such it has produced a Sports Development Child Protection Policy (see).
The policy seeks to:
- protect such young people placed in our care from harm, abuse or exploitation
- promote good practice and safeguard Torbay Council, its employees and clubs who hire or utilise facilities and volunteers.
