Independent Remuneration Panel

The Mayor and all Councillors (known as ‘members’) receive a basic allowance which helps to cover the cost of being a member (e.g. telephone, stationery, costs of visiting constituents etc.). The Mayor and some Councillors who have additional responsibility also receive a Special Responsibility Allowance.  Details of all allowances payable to members are set out in the Council’s Members’ Allowances Scheme.
The Council is required (under the Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) Regulations 2003) to establish and maintain an independent remuneration panel to keep the Members’ Allowances Scheme under review and make recommendations to the Council regarding the Scheme.
Torbay Council is seeking up to three new members for the Independent Remuneration Panel.
Members of the Independent Remuneration Panel must not be an elected member of the Authority or a member of any committee of the Authority or Brixham Town Council and must not be disqualified from becoming a member of the Authority.
The post is on a voluntary basis for a four year term of office although expenses will be paid.
If you would like to know more about the appointment please telephone Teresa Buckley, Senior Democratic Services Officer on (01803) 207013.
An application form together with full details of the requirements of the appointment, the type of person we are seeking and additional background information can be found in the Related Documents.
Applications forms must be received by Democratic Services before 5.00pm on Monday 26 September 2011.
The Independent Remuneration Panel is made up of between three and five members and undertakes a comprehensive review of the Council’s Members’ Allowances Scheme at least once every four years.  It meets in private and will publish its recommendations in a report which will be available to the public prior to its consideration by the Council.
