In the Community Safety Team we are constantly striving to improve our services for residents and businesses in Torbay.
This page highlights some of our key achievements in areas such as environmental health, food safety, anti-social behaviour and trading standards.
Community Safety
An Integrated Offender Management scheme has been set up, bringing together the police and probation service. The team are co-located and can better manage offenders who commit the most crimes in the bay.
The Family Intervention Programme is effectively working with families in difficulty to help reduce offending behaviour
A project bringing a wide range of agencies was developed in Paignton, aiming to improve outcomes for the community and reduce the long-term reliance on the public purse.
The Commercial Team
- It is now possible to apply for various licences online.
You can now submit forms and pay using our secure online facility for a range of licences and permits, including Temporary Event Notices, pet shop licences and Transfers of premises licences. We have received over 90 online notifications of Temporary Event Notices and 35 online registrations of food premises. - The Food Hygiene Rating System was launched in November 2011, providing clear information on the food premises' levels of hygiene. - A No Cold Calling Home scheme was set up, which saw a massive take up. Over 700 information packs and stickers were sent to a wide range of the community Find out more about the scheme and how to apply for a pack by visiting our No Cold Calling Home page
- An accident filtering system has been implemented to make sure resources are targeted to areas of greatest need.This has resulted in a more efficient allocation of officer time.
The Community Protection Team
- Torbay Council successfully prosecuted individuals for dog fouling totalling £825 of fines and £410 of costs.
- The Anti-Social Behaviour team achieved 2 full ASBO and 1 interim ASBO. Two further court orders were granted to address poor behaviour. The Coucil and the Police also worked in partnership to close down a premises which was a hub of anti-social behaviour in the bay.
- A mediation project has been started, with the aim to help nip problems of anti-social behaviour in the bud. Volunteers were recruited to receive mediation training. Once they have completed their course, the police and community protection team will be able to call on their new skills to help find amicable solutions to local problems
- It is now possible to pay for dog fouling fines over the phone or using Chip and Pin systems at Connections. All dog and litter fines are loaded up onto the payment system every evening. Call 01803 208025 to pay for your dog fouling or littering fixed penalty notice over the phone. It will soon be possible to pay for such fines online.
- The Housing Standards team processed 502 complaints of housing disrepair. The team also followed up problems identified in 141 premises, serving 14 enforcement notices.
- The Housing Standards team have put back in use over 270 empty properties in the Bay
