Becoming a Governor

Would You Like to Become a Governor?

Serving as a school governor is a valuable and important volunteering role.  With over 500 governor positions in Torbay schools (including those in Academies) and most governors serving for a four year term, there is regular turnover.  Governing bodies need a wide range of skills and expertise and Governing Body Support is always looking for new recruits.  Being a governor does require a time commitment for attending meetings (usually at least around eight a year) and for undertaking training.
If you would like to put yourself forward, you can either contact a school directly, or contact Governing Body Support
If you would like to apply to become an Authority governor please contact Governing Body Support.  More information is given below about the appointment procedure but we will be happy to answer any questions that you might have concerning school governorship.
As there are some restrictions on who can be a governor, all governors will need to complete a self declaration form to confirm eligibility.

What Support and Training is Available?

Governing Body Support publishes a training programme (see below) that provides governors with a mix of training on skills development and topical matters.  This is part of the subscription service which governing bodies decide on annually.
Also as part of our subscribed services to schools, new governors receive an information pack from Governing Body Support. There is a two module induction course which every new governor should attend within a term of appointment/election.  The training is usually delivered over two evening sessions on consecutive weeks and is free to governors.  However, schools who do not subscribe to Governing Body Support will be charged a small fee per session for each new governor attending training.
Each governing body will also provide their own induction programme and materials for new governors.
