Book Prescription Scheme

Many of us develop emotional or psychological problems at some point in our lives, including:

Can books help?

Medication can be effective in treating emotional problems, but many people also find support by reading a good 'self help' book. Some of the best books have step-by-step treatment programmes with exercises, self assessments and diary sheets for the reader to use. Like all self-help methods, of course, the patient also has to put some effort in.
The library is working with local doctors and mental health professionals to offer the Books on Prescription scheme to people who want to use self help books. A list of professionally recommended books has been bought for libraries across Torbay.

How does the Book Prescription scheme work?

You can use the scheme in two ways.  If you are happy using the books on your own, ask for a Book Prescription leaflet from your local library. It contains a list of the books available, together with a request slip to fill in. Choose a book from the list, fill in the book prescription slip and hand it to a member of library staff.
If you would like support in the use of the book then take the leaflet to your local GP and talk to them. Ask if they provide a Self Help Clinic.

Do I have to be a member of the library?

No, but if you're not a member then you will be asked to join when you hand your prescription slip into the library. As long as the prescription has your name and address on it, you won't be asked for any other proof of identity.
The Book Prescription Scheme is a collaboration between the library services within Devon - Plymouth, Torbay and Devon - as well as the University of Plymouth and several of the Devon primary care trusts.
