Domestic Clinical Waste


Waste containing human or animal tissue, blood or other bodily fluids or excretions, drugs or other pharmaceutical products, swabs, dressings, syringes etc may be classified as clinical waste.  Where these are produced in the home, these should be disposed of as follows:

Clinical/Sharps Collections

These present a high risk to personnel handling the waste and must be contained within a purpose made rigid 'sharps' container or yellow clinical bag for other clinical wastes.
These must be collected seperately to regular houseold waste and disposed of by incineration.
To request a confidential clinical collection from your household please telephone us on 01803 207900.
Please note: Sharps Collections are made on a Monday. Requests taken before noon Thursday will be Collected the following Monday. After noon Thursday, collections will be made the Monday after. Bank Holiday Mondays are not affected, and these will continue as normal.
Residents are able to request replacement or additional clinical or sharps container. Following a request containers take 5 working days to delivered.
In all cases waste containers are for collection of household waste materials by TOR2 only and should not be requested for any other purpose
If you requested a new conainer over 5 working days ago and it has not yet been delivered please call the Contact Centre on 01803 207900 to report this.

Commercial Sharps / Clinical Collections

Details are as above but there will be a charge on Commercial Collections:

Microbiological cultures

These would not normally be produced in the domestic environment and would not be collected or disposed of by the Council. You should seek the advice of the Environment Agency who would advise of a specialised waste disposal service.

Drugs or other Pharmaceutical products

These items should be returned to the pharmicist for disposal.
