The Council, as Highway Authority, has responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the Highway.
Potholes are defined as a defect in the highway surface, which is surrounded by surfacing material on all sides. Edge damage generally occurs on uncurbed rural roads and is generally caused by vehicles overrunning the verge.
Potholes can develop over short periods of time and depending on the size, depth and location there will be a greater or lesser risk to the general public. The response of the Council will be dependent on the severity of the reported defect, traffic type, speed and volume; road alignment and visibility and also the position in relation to road width. Potholes can also appear on pavements/footways.
